Ganesh Chaturthi is the birthday of Lord Ganesha, the son of Shiva and
Parvati. It is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka (Vinayaga) Chavithi.
Ganesh is also known by the names Ganapati, Ekadanta, Vinayaka and Heramba.
Ganesh is also known as the patron god of travelling.
Vinayaga Chaturthi festival is observed in the Hindu calendar. Ganesha, the elephant-headed,
is widely worshipped as the supreme god of wisdom, prosperity and good
fortune.
In India, Coconut, jaggery, 21 modakas, 21 durva blades of grass and red flowers are
offered. Sweets are distributed because in Hindu legend Ganesh liked them.
Ganesha(Vinayaga) statue is anointed with red unguent, typically made of Kumkum and
Sandalwood paste.
Vinayaka Chavithi is a public holiday in Mauritius.
