Chinese New Year or Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional holidays. It is
sometimes called the Lunar New Year. The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first lunar
month in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th, called as Lantern Festival.
This New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese. The celebration starts with the New Moon on the first day
of the new year and ends on the Lantern day, full moon 15 days later.
In many areas the highlight of the lantern festival is the dragon dance. At New Year celebration
people wear red clothes because it is believed that red will scare away evil spirits and bad fortune.
Traditionally, Red envelopes or red packets are passed out during the Chinese New Year's celebration. It
is common for adults to give red packets to children. Red envelopes always contain money. Dragon and lion dances are
common.
