 Thanksgiving Day is a harvest festival. It commemorates an autumn harvest feast held
by the Pilgrim colonists and members of the Wampanoag people at Plymouth in 1621.
On this day people express gratitude to God for his blessings and give gifts thanking to dear
ones for their love. Though thanksgiving originated in America, but it has spread its wings to
other continents of the world.
The food includes ducks, turkeys, geese, swan and venison, fish, berries, watercress, lobster,
dried fruit, clams, and plums. Watching football during Thanksgiving is a popular tradition.
United States(USA):
This Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. U.S. tradition compares the holiday with
a meal held in 1621 by the Wampanoag and the Puritans who settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts. In New York
City, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is held annually every Thanksgiving Day.
Along with United States, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands
also celebrated on the same day.
Canada:
It is celebrated on the second Monday in October. The history of Thanksgiving in Canada
goes back to an explorer, Martin Frobisher, who had been trying to find a northern passage to the
Pacific Ocean.
Croatia:
Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day is a public holiday in Croatia. It commemorated the War of Independence.
It is celebrated on August 5.
Grenada:
In Grenada there is a national holiday held on 25 October. It marks the anniversary of the
United States led invasion of the island in 1983.
Liberia:
This Day is celebrated on the first Monday in November.
Norfolk Island:
Norfolk Island usually celebrated on the last Wednesday in November. American whalers
of the 19th Century established the observance of Americans exist on the Island.
Solomon Islands:
It is celebrated on December 26.
