Vesak is a celebration that commemorates the Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and
death, and his passing into nirvana.
It is also called as Buddha's Birthday, Buddha Day, Wesak, Visakah Puja, Vaishaka,
Buddha Purnima or Jayanti, Visakha Bucha, Saga Dawa.
Wesak falls on the full moon Uposatha day in Buddhist calendar. To celebrate Vesak as the
Buddha's birthday was formalized at the first Conference of the World Fellowship of
Buddhists held in Sri Lanka in 1950.
Wesak is a national holiday in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia,
Nepal, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand.
Vesak is celebrated as a religious and a cultural festival in Sri Lanka on the full moon
of the month of May. In Myanmar it is called as Fullmoon Day of Kasone.
